Scilly, September

Cirrus N147CD on ScillyCharlotte and I enjoyed our Scilly trip earlier in the year so much that we took advantage of a promising weather weekend in late September to visit again in Cirrus N147CD.

Until recently Scilly airport was closed all day on Sunday making a weekend jaunt out of the question, however they are now operating a one hour departure slot on Sunday afternoon which we decided to take advantage of.

The Star Castle Hotel on ScillyOn of the great things about Cirrus is it makes short work of journeys that would be a full day out in a PA28, and dispite a headwind we made it in one hop of two hours.

A quick search on the internet had equipped us with a list of hotels and we chose the Star Castle Hotel which dates back to 1593.  The Star Castle has more history than can possibly related in this blog, so why not take a look at their web site. We were staying on one of the top floor rooms in the main building with views out towards Bishop's Rock light house.

Departing St Marys Scilly (2)Departing St Marys Scilly (1)The next afternoon we were ready to depart and as instructed we telephoned Land's End St Just's to give them our estimated airborne and first contact times for good measure also rang Perranporth where we decided to refuel (there is no AVGAS on Scilly).  The airfield was eerily deserted and windswept  as we lined up on the uphill slope of the half tarmac half grass runway 27.

Departing St Marys Scilly (4)Departing St Marys Scilly (3)Everything went to plan and we got some good photographs of this challenging airfield as we departed clearly showing the slopes.

Lands EndWith the help of a stonking tailwind we covered the 28 miles to land's End in just 10 minutes and reached Perranporth 10 minutes after that.  After a quick refuelling stop the tailwind helped us on our way and we were back at Denham and hour and a half later.
