Many Private Pilots hold what is called an IMC rating, which is a cut down version of the full instrument rating that commercial jet pilots hold. This enables us to fly in cloud and bad weather.

Mixed weather over the English countrysideSometimes low cloud and drizzle is encountered and even though we could legally fly in these conditions it is not normally very nice to do so on a fun trip.

On the other hand the IMC and IR ratings mean we can confidently fly in in conditions which basic private pilots can't and if we wish we can fly in and around and above cloud for enjoyment on a pleasure flight.
