Many options are available for our destination. Often I will choose the route so we will be travelling to another airfield for lunch and then returning. I will normally pick the route so that it is different each way and is a scenic as possible.
If the weather is very good I favour going to Compton Abbas which is a nice grass airfield south of Salisbury. The normal route will be to travel from Denham, over High Wycombe southbound to Southampton and over the Solent to the Isle of Wight, around the Needles and across Bournemouth. The return route takes us across Boscombe Down, Thruxton and the now-disused Greenham Common near Newbury. This trip take about 45-60 minutes outbound and about 35-45 minutes returning, depending on the aircraft. Another pleasant trip is to Kemble which is south west of Cirencester. Kemble has a good restaurant and a huge runway and is home to several jet's including Hunters which fly regularly. The outbound trip can take in Henley and the vale of the white horse. The return trip can take in the vale of Evesham, and Silverstone. If the weather is less appealing, we will go to Wellesbourne Mountford which is near Stratford upon Avon. We will go up over Oxford and come back overhead Silverstone. Each leg of this trip takes 35-50 minutes. Wellesbourne has an aviation Museum and a Vulcan Bomber which very occasionally does taxi runs (see photo). Other longer trips I do from time to time include Le Touquet in Northern France and Caernarfon in North West Wales. In twin-engined aircraft we can fly over London. |
